set phasers to love me

At the risk of repeating myself (which I totally am, right this minute), COMMUNITY.  LeVar Burton was on last night, and oh my God.  Donald Glover singing "Reading Rainbow" and crying, you guys.  And if there is anything I have learned in my mad dash through every single episode, it's that there is nothing more hilarious than Donald Glover in tears.  Except maybe Donald Glover screaming.  But, here--don't take MY word for it!*

*Did you see what I did there?

**Also: watch Community.  If you're a Firefly fan, hang on till the 5:15 mark, at least.

listening to (and watching)

I haven't been listening to a lot of music lately, mainly because in my spare time I have been doing one of two things: reading a book, or watching Community.  Lately, I've also been listening to music from Community, because they do things like this:
"Somewhere Out There" - Troy (Donald Glover) and Abed (Danny Pudi)

And this:
"Anthropology Rap" - Troy (Donald Glover), Abed (Danny Pudi), and Betty White

I have been shamelessly listening to "Somewhere Out There" for days.  Then, of course, there's the magnificent Spanish 101 Rap, and personally I adore this medley of the musical themes of the first season.  If you watch it, bully for you.  If you don't, I hope you'll check it out.  Bottom line, the show is genius, and if they don't get renewed for a third season I will cry forever.

This post is dedicated to Laura, since "Somewhere Out There" became our theme song in college, when we realized we were destined to spend our lives living in different states.  And also because I texted her all of the lyrics on Saturday, surprising both of us with the discovery that I at some point managed to memorize them.

visit tranquil miranda

There's nothing I love more than a good vintage travel poster.  Except maybe science fiction.  I like sci-fi quite a lot.  What's that, you say?  This product combines vintage poster design and Joss Whedon masterwork Serenity??  Swoon!

pushing daisies

I watched the first three episodes of Pushing Daisies last night, courtesy of Netflix.  I was aware of it while it was on, and aware that I would probably enjoy it, but I never really made the effort to check it out.  Not sure why.  It's since been cancelled, but Netflix gave me the opportunity to tune in, after the face.
Most. Adorable. Show. Ever.

I thought that the whole not-being-able-to-touch thing would drive me crazy (he brought her back to life, but if they ever touch she'll die again--for good), but three episodes in and I'm still hooked.  I don't know whether this will change, but currently Ned and Chuck's delight in once again being in each other's lives far overshadows the inherent tragedy of their situation.  I want to hug them both, all the time.  This show makes me laugh, not in a ha-ha funny sort of way, but in a sheer delight-can't-help-it sort of way.  I love it.  It doesn't hurt that it's retro and pretty in a way that rubs me just right, either.
One downside: Now I want pie.  Constantly.

murdoch

The reasons why Murdoch Mysteries were the first thing I added to my brand-spanking-new Netflicks queue:

1. I love Canada.
2. I love forensic procedurals.
3. I love Victoriana.

Guess which show combines all three (and does it pretty darn well).  Check it out yourself.

NERD

Okay, you know I'm a fan of Fringe.  Well, it came back last night (oh, happy day!) and the episode consisted mainly of a massive flashback to 1985.  In that vein, the show's intro was all 80s "fringe" science and graphics.  Even if you don't watch the show, watch this.  It's hilarious.  This if what the intro is usually:

51 days

One of the things I did after the power had come back on on Sunday was catch up on my DVR.  I go through phases in how I spend my leisure time.  I tend to rotate between reading, television, and video games.  Lately, my interest has been in reading, specifically edge-of-your-seat thrillers and historical fiction set in the old west.  Do not ask me why those two, I don't know.  I simply head to the library or used book shop and grab what looks good.  However, by Sunday night I had read four books (2 thrillers, 2 westerns), and was ready for a break.  No, I didn't watch the Super Bowl, who do you think I am?

So I holed up in the basement and caught myself up on the previous week's episodes.  One of which was the winter finale of Fringe.  I love Fringe.  I love Fringe so much that I have a little widget dealy on my igoogle homepage telling me when the next Fringe episode is, in days, hours, minutes, and seconds.  This is what it looks like now:
Now whenever I open the internet, I want to cry.  Thanks, widget.

ps: if you feel like discussing the finale with me, I am TOTALLY okay with that

tv panacea

My week got off to a rocky start, but all I can say is thank God for borrowed "How I Met Your Mother" dvds.

gleeee

I spent most of today doing research at a local university, so you can't say I'm not trying to get these papers done, I just have a lot of trouble doing any actual writing without a certain amount of pressure on me. As a result, I have a comprehensive outline for my Great Gatsby paper, yet seem unable to write more than a single sentence (and to be honest, it's not a great sentence). So here I am, distracting myself from my own frustrating academic block.

Every time I see this advertisement it makes me smile for no real reason at all. I have never been a big fan of shows set in high schools (with few notable exceptions), so I find my fascination with this trailer, well, fascinating. We'll stick it in the Hulu playlist come May and see what we see.

cramming out with my dvr

I've discovered that watching television can be useful in my studies, at least for my class on 20th century furniture. Why? Because designers for television dramas evidently love mid-century modern. I don't blame them, I love it too, but it never ceases to amuse me. I've mainly spotted iconic pieces on CSI (like the Barcelona chairs and couch in the victims apartment in the latest episode), but last night I found another. House has a Wassily Chair in his office!See it there in the background? It's an iconic chair out of the Bauhaus, and extremely expensive. On a hospital budget? Yeah, right. Maybe House brought it from home.
